December
2011When Amber came in she had three babies. She is a smaller husky. Looks like someone is trying to breed Klee Kai’s. We have had 4 just like her in the last two months and now there is another one in Harris Co. We think they are all from the same litter.
She was
found in a culvert and the people that found her tried to
pull her out not knowing she had puppies in there and she
bit them so Animal Control was called. Unfortunately they
had to stay in there for 10 days. Any unprotected puppies in
a place like that does not stand a chance not getting sick.
Unfortunately the puppies (3) died of distemper. They were
about 4 weeks old and only weighed 2-4 lbs. Amber was also
sick and not eating. She also had distemper. I force fed her
for about 10 days and the Vet finally said she was not
getting any better and we had decided to put her down on the
following Monday if she had not improved. She was on two
very strong antibiotics. Then that weekend I called a Vet
that I had talked to at an event that was working with a new
chicken serum for distemper dogs. He said if she had not
reached the neurotically stage yet there was a 95% chance of
success so I decided to try it. They like rescues because
they know they will not get blamed if it does not work and
she would die anyway without something. So she got the
shots—three shots 12 hours apart. He gave the first one and
I gave the other two that he had given me to take home with
her. After the first shot she drank water which she had not
done in 10 days and continued to improve from then on. That
was about 3 weeks ago and not she is doing great. She still
needs spayed and heartworm treatment but I am waiting till
after the first of the year so she will be stronger. She was
also very depressed after the pups died. She is now coming
out of her shell and doing regular doggie things. She even
played with a toy and got up on the couch with me and slept
while I watched TV. If don’t do much of that but did not
want to move to disturb her. She is still shy but warms up
fast when she trusts you. She never showed any signs of
aggression when I handled the pups and gave meds etc so she
trusted me.
Thanks Julie for sponsoring Amber in honor of your mom for Christmas. |

When Tilton came in from Harris Co animal Control his head was completely upside down. We thought it was a neurological problem but found out it was just a really bad ear infection that had been neglected. He only weighed 43 lbs. and should weigh 60 – 65. He also had very little hair because of mange and heartworms. We tackled the ear infection first because that was the most important. Of course wormed him gave him shots and good meals. He was in the Vets office for 4 days. But he eventually came around and started eating really good and gaining weight. Then for the mange and skin infection (dermatitis). Thanks Julie for sponsoring Tilton in honor of you dad for Christmas. |

Hi, I am Zeb. I am in pretty bad shape but the nice people here at Husky Haven say I will get better. I have mange and am very skinny. They ae treating me for the mange and feed me three times a day. They give me baths with special shampoo that helps make me feel better. I am a good boy while they give me baths and blow me dry. I am so lucky they care about me enough to take such good care of me. This morning I jumped on my foster mom. She says she usually doesn't like dogs to do that but she was happy I was feeling well enough to do it. As you can imagine I have some medical bills to pay. I would appreciate it if you could help with that.
