I will bolt out the door so need to be watched closely when the going in and out of the house. I was 78 pounds when I was rescued by Husky Haven. I have since lost 20 pounds and need a very strict diet as I will eat as much as I can and that could be detrimental to my health. Her foster mom says.."She is very laid back and a lady in the house. She is crate trained but does not require it. I think she has lost a little more weight and starting to get it under control.  She loves belly rubs and being scratched behind the ears. She would be a great apartment dog as she is not active. She runs with me but I honestly think she would be happier being inside laying down! NOTES: Hi, I'm Lady Bird, and my foster folks think I am absolutely wonderful! That is really saying something since when I first came to Husky Haven, I had been tied to a tree and was trying to nurse a litter of puppies. So, I had no coat (and what I had made it look like a Bad Hair Day!) I was so skinny, too. But, my pups were fat and fine. When I went to live with my foster family and be treated for heartworm I got my gorgeous coat back. It's short, but very thick. (you should see it - I'm a red, but the coat is light red - almost gray)and sport a beautiful plumed tail. I have gained a lot of weight and now cut quite a figure! More importantly, I get along well with other dogs, puppies, and people. I don't bark much and rarely dig or chew. I am crate trained and can sit. I don't know many commands, but I understand "No" and "Anh" and try hard to obey. I have not learned the "escape artist" thing yet. But, hey, I'm a husky! I will make someone a wonderful pet, and I'd love to find a forever home. More pics... {2}

She is doing GREAT!! We changed her name to Star, and she started responding to her new name instantly. She is great with Nicholas. She's already getting protective towards Nicholas. I can tell that she's had a litter of puppies before. She has mothering-instincts towards him. We did get another dog to help keep her busy. I have a cousin that is moving into a different apartment which doesn't allow pets. So we took his 1/2 cocker spaniel / 1/2 Pekinese mic spayed female named Genie. They are doing fine together. Star is a little dominate over Genie, but they are learning to live together just fine. I have included a couple of pictures of Nicholas and Star for you to see. NOTES: I am sweet and good-natured.  My tail is always wagging!  I am calmer and quieter than some of my siblings.  I am also smaller but am eating well and growing quickly.  I am living with three large dogs.  The collie and husky play with me, but the greyhound growls and runs away from me.  I know I will win him over if I persist because people tell me I am adorable!  I love to play with the little kids next door!  I prefer to play with others but can entertain myself with toys if need be.  I like to snuggle and sit on your lap in between play sessions.  I am making lots of progress with housebreaking.  I haven’t had an accident overnight (up to six hours) in my crate for a week now!  Of course, I still have accidents inside sometimes (I am just a little puppy after all), but I do understand what outside is for. UPDATED 11/13/05 Austin is doing so well. He has fully adjusted to his new home and has brought  so much life to the household. He evens wears out Nicholas. They are so great with each other. Austin is in puppy school. He knows his name. He sits and will come when we call him and is working on a handshake. He now has his own tennis shoe so he won't chew on our good shoes. Potty training has gone really well. He only does his business outside. He LOVES the doggie door and uses it all day long. Austin goes on 3 walks a day and now knows when he sees his leash, it's time to go to the lake and chase the ducks into the water. He sits on the edge of the walk and watches the ducks swim away. He is such a great fit for our active family. Everyday he does something we laugh at, like stick his head out his doggie door and bark at the squirrels. On a scalle of one to ten, Austin is an eleven!!!

UPDATED 11/9/05: Austin is feeling right at home. He knows how to go in and out the doggie door already and has had just one accident in the house. We have walked him along the lake 3 times now and just loves it. Austin does great on a leash. He tries to chase the ducks we have scattered around the lake. He has made a bunch of new friends, both dogs and people. Austin and Nicholas have become best of friends already. Its really cute to watch them play. Austin has adjusted really well and has made himself at home. He goes to the vet tomorrow and he begins his puppy training tomorrow night. We'll let you know how he does.

NOTES: I am a small girl that ended up in the shelter with horrible damage to the skin around my eyes and on my nose. The vet thinks the damage was caused by fire ants. I will have no lasting problems, but it is was very painful. My face is healing nicely. All of the infection and scabs are gone, and my skin is nice and pink. Update 10/2/05 It was a real pleasure to meet you yesterday!!!  Sundowner is adjusting to his new envrionment quickly.  Last night when we got home, he ran around the large backyard that we have with Angel.  They both drank a lot of ice water, and Sundowner ate like there was no tomorrow!  He slept on the floor last night, by the foot of our bed.  Angel likes to sleep in her kennel with her plush carpet and pillow.  It really worked out well, considering it was the first night.  Sundowner didn't make any noise while he was asleep, and he sure is smiling a lot.  As you said, he loves attention and loves to be petted.  We sure gave him plenty of that!  We were surprised when he went to drink water out of the toilet!  We learned that the lids must remain closed at all times, especially since the toilets are chemically treated.  Ron and I have decided to name Sundowner, "Toby."  I once had an American Eskimo while growing up named Toby, and that name has really stuck with me all my life, and I am very partial to the name Toby. She is very calm and well-mannered in the house.  She is reliably housebroken and crate-trained.  She sleeps quietly in the crate at night.  Marie thinks she is a lap dog.  If you’re sitting down, she will put her head and front paws on your lap.  So sweet!  She wants to curl up on the couch but has learned it’s against the rules at her foster home.  Marie loves ear rubs.  She gets along with other dogs.  She is currently living with three large males.  Marie has not shown any alpha tendencies or aggression towards humans or canines.  She enjoys playing but spends most of the day quietly lying around and checking on everyone in the house.  She would do well in an apartment as long as she was walked and exercised regularly.  An old injury caused Marie the loss of sight in one eye.  She can see perfectly fine with the other eye and gets around like any other dog.  Marie can jump/climb baby gates and fences.  She cleared a six foot wooden fence in seconds.  She needs a secure, tall fence and close supervision and/or a leash when outdoors.  Marie will be a wonderful companion for a lucky person or family! NOTES: Sissy is a lovely lady. She has beautiful blue eyes too! She is very quiet in her crate. She is ready for her forever home. She does not pull on her lead or do other unruly behaviors. She was rescued with another husky belonging to her household from the Houston SPCA. She has not had a lot of training, but she is a willing learner.

Updated 1/5/06: I want to update you on  Sissy. First of all, we renamed her Leica. She is very affectionate  and friendly with people, which we greatly appreciate. Also, she has  gotten along with Gorby so well that after her first few days we put her  crate away. She and Gorby have the run of the house most mornings, and we  have had no problems. I think they sleep on one couch or the other most of  the time that I am at school. She uses her crate pad as her bed at night.  

   She evacuated during Rita  with us to Bentonville, Arkansas. They two dogs gave us no  trouble during those difficult two weeks. In fact, when we left Lake  Charles before the storm, they were so quiet and obedient as if to say  "please take us with you". Leica has not been much help repairing the  damage to our house and yard. She much prefers to stay inside out of the  heat.

   Leica is very vocal,  and always reminds us when it is time for the dogs' twice daily walks, or  if I am a little late with their meals. Her only problem is a very  sensitive stomach that a steady diet of  Hills Canine i/d and  Science Diet controls. I pay dearly for deviating from that diet.   All in all, she has proved to be an excellent pet. We are so glad to have  her with us.

We are having a great time with Russia! She is SO smart! And of course lovable....a big spoiled baby....Healthwise, she seems to be doing fine too. She's wearing the "mite collar" and so far the mange seems to be pretty localized. Pat of Husky Haven was very helpful and supportive. (My oldest daughter said she was almost ready to bring home another Husky....I told her not yet....give me time to perfcet the raising of Russia first.....).

Russia is really growing! In just two weeks I can see the difference. My husband makes sure she gets plenty of exercise.....running, walking, she even imitates Sasha and bounces around the backyard....my husband claims she's doing her bunny hop routine (smile). I will keep you updated. We've taken some photos.....just havent downloaded them on the computer yet. Will send those to you too.

NOTES: Rose is a young wild thing. Her exuberance and enthusiasm gives her foster parents a lot of laughs. She is a black and white husky with one blue eye and one parti-eye (mostly brown, but with a little blue showing. She is about 7 months old, and small, and very sweet. She would be a wonderful dog for a little boy or girl. Her coat is not very long, but it is indeed a double husky coat. She is ready to go!

Update: July 12, 2005: Rose is doing beautifully!!!! We had a medium sized dog door and Rose was having trouble getting her shoulders through, so we installed the extra large on yesterday and she LOVES it. She has not had any accidents in the house at all. She just goes outside and comes right back in!!! Also, the food aggression seems to have gone away. She and Tuffy both get treats together and she does not bother him at all, even if she finishes hers first. One day, Rose was eating her dinner in the kitchen, Tuffy came in and laid down next to her and she didn't fuss at all. I think she is learning that there is enough food and treats for everyone!

I have also been working with her on sit, down and stay. She is wonderful!!! She will do all three with only hand signs!!! The stay is a little difficult, the treats are just too tempting sometimes, but she is doing wonderful!!! I have to tell you that Rose is one of the very best pups we have ever had. I am so glad she has joined our family!!! --Rebecca

NOTES: Chester needs a new home because his owner has a serious illness. He currently lives with three cats and a female husky. Chester sleeps with one of the cats! He gets along with other dogs and has done well at the local dog parks. He does like to roughhouse with his canine pals. Chester is quiet and gentle with children. This boy has wonderful house manners. He is reliably housebroken and non-destructive. Chesterís owner has worked with him on obedience. He knows several commands and walks nicely on a loose leash after his initial fast pace. Chester may be a good candidate for pet therapy since he has impeccable bedside manners. His owner writes, "He preferred to sleep on the bed next to Mom's hospital bed when she was at home (which was weeks and weeks). He often came and got me when I didn't hear her calls. He took my hand in his mouth and tugged." He does need to have at least a 6ft fence and should not be left alone in the backyard due to his desire to run free. More pic...

Update: June 23, 2005: I just wanted to express my appreciation for making it possible to adopt Chester. Cecilia and Alan were so kind to bring Chester to us since I could not figure a way to transport Steve, his wheelchair and the other two pets to them. Being a foster is such a wonderful and thankless job I bet. Chester is such a wonderful pup...and he has such a cute personality as well. Very affectionate and playful, and working out with Seska who will be the dominate dog. But their play rairly get's out of hand. Update: July 18, 2005: Tikaani (Nike) is doing great! We all have so much fun together. During the day he follows Katrina around the house and helps her while she does her chores and studies. In the evening he knows dad is home and it is time to play! We start off with a game of fetch and then it's time to strap on the harness and leash! Boy does he talk when he sees his harness and leash being taken out! After he is all harnessed and ready to go, out comes the skate board and he goes nuts as he can't wait to run. The next thing you know, we are cruising at top speed around the neighborhood and getting rather odd looks from the people on the block (Siberians are not common place here). He runs at a pretty steady pace most of the time. However, the children of the neighborhood have figured out our schedule and watch for us to come by everyday and when he see's them he has to show off by turning on the afterburners while we run by them. As soon as he thinks we are well passed them he slows back to his normal pace.

After that he retires to is evening meal and lays on his doggie pillow while we watch TV. He has also fallen love with this little toy mouse! It's hilarious as he carries it around with him no matter where he goes! He lays it by his food bowl while he drinks, carries while he goes outside to go to the bathroom and then on to bed. He also just carries it around the house while we do our day to day chores.

He's a great dog and we are very happy! We want to thank you so much for what you do and helping us find a dog like him. --Ryan and Katrina

Update: June 27, 2005: Well just to let you know that Mandy is doing great. She is doing well with her food issues; I can now pet her and touch her bowl while she is eating without any protest. But with the bones she still growls some but no longer shows her teeth and she allows me to take the bone but is quick to let me know that she rather I didn't but after praising her for allowing me to take her bone she gets is right back. Jett and Mandy are playing good now although they still have some confrontation but are both quick to stop when told to. Jett was neuter 3 weeks ago and is healing well. I still want to foster and hope to start by September, I will let you know.

One last thing, since Mandy we have been able to let Jett be free in the house without any issues although he still likes to be in his kennel the door stay open. Mandy really does not like her kennel. Oh yeah last Friday we took the baby's to Millie Bush dog park and Mandy just loved it. She acted like she had been there before and she loves to swim, Jazz also loves to swim but Jett not so much. Well I will contact you soon about fostering. --Terri

Update: Tuesday, August 09, 2005 We don't have a digital camera yet, so photos are coming at a future date. We couldn't wait any longer to thank you all again for considering us to adopt Meagan(Fluffy,April 2005). She truly is the light of our life. She begins and ends our days as our own little ray of sunshine. She is a roly poly stick of dynamite who is either at full tilt or in a dead sleep. Even in her sleep she's not still. She loves to sleep on her back with all four feet in the air, she than proceeds to move one or all of her paws periodically and we swear she's smiling the biggest puppy smile. When we first brought her home she was walking softly around the back yard and stayed in that mode for about two weeks. She kept peering around like she wasn't sure all this room was just for her or that it wasn't o.k. to go anywhere she wanted to...WELL... She's over that now and runs figure eights at full tilt through the back and side yards with a wild grin from ear to ear. We‚re so excited because she‚s finally started wagging her tail. We think she‚s realized she‚s finally in her forever home. She's a busy girl too, always looking for a task to do or something to explore. She has communicated to the birds and squirrels that they will have to make an appointment with her to use HER backyard from now on. She met a toad in the backyard the other day and every time he hopped, she hopped.
Meagan absolutely adores her walks. She has met several dogs on these outings (why people let their dogs wander is beyond me) she has been a perfect lady with each and every one, whether big or small. (We were worried about the two snack size chihuahuas that came out of nowhere to meet her the first day we brought her home. She was so sweet to them, we don't worry about her around other dogs at all now.) She LOVES to play fetch...After over 15 years with Siberians we never in our life even heard about a siberian playing ball.(We know... we don't get out much). We saw the cutest pink football that we brought her, just for a chew toy. When I threw the football out there for her and she immediately fetched it and brought it back to me, I just stood there with my mouth open. She is definitely a digger, but many years ago we had buried wire under the ground along the fence line and it has worked well with her. She peeps through the wooden privacy fence, but doesn't make a sound at anyone walking along the sidewalk. Meagan is definitely a talker to us, she loves to woo-woo us about all the things she's thinking about. She has TONS of her own toys and she has been a miracle dog, because she leaves our things alone. (Of course we don't leave her alone, I'm sure unsupervised she would eventually get into something). We just don't want anything to happen to her, also we're able to have one of us  always with her. She LOVES air conditioning. She was already crate trained, and we got her the largest crate we could find, (for a 75 pound dog) We're concerned though because she is 9 months old today and she already weighs 42 pound. (She still hasn't grown into her feet though). She LOVES to ride in the car. You don't have to say a word, just open the door and stand back. She hasn't given us any trouble at all about using the dog harness. Lou was so sweet to take such good care of our babygirl until ya'll allowed us to adopt her, She truly is a member of our family. We apologize for going on so long and promise to keep future updates short and sweet. We would just like to say to anyone out there who is thinking of buying a puppy from a pet store etc. DON'T, DON'T, DON'T.  Adopt one of these heaven sent animals from HUSKY HAVEN and fill your life with love and cuddles and puppy kisses and new discoveries and... Well, you get the picture, so stop what you're doing, get on the internet or pick up the phone and visit with the good people of HUSKY HAVEN and fill your life with joy.

NOTES: She weighs just 35 lbs. and, although she's still growing, will most likely be a small adult. This girl is an absolute sweetheart! She loves to give kisses and receive belly rubs. She also likes to be brushed.She has alow voice and likes to talk and sing to you. Hollie is already crate and house trained! She knows her name, "come," and will "sit" for a treat and her food. She is very energetic outdoors but quite calm in the house, which is a great combination. Hollie gets along with other dogs and would be happiest in a home with a canine companion. She is currently living with a collie, a greyhound, and another husky. She plays hard withthe collie.Her favorite games are fetch, tag,and hide and seek. Hollie is still a playful puppy but has nice house manners. She does like to unstuff things, so she needs to be supervised around stuffed toys, comforters, etc. She also jumps up and nips when excited, mostly when outdoors in the yard. Although she loves her food,Hollie is not at all food aggressive. A couple of days ago, I reached down her throat to remove a piece of a toy. She responds well to gentle corrections.She must be trained using positive reinforcement because she is submissive. Hollie will be a wonderful pet for a lucky family!

Update: Septemer 5, 2005: I just wanted to tell you, Hollie is the smartest dog we know. She already knows how to sit, shake, lay, rollover, come, leave-it, fetch, bring-it, hide and go seek, through my legs and tag. She is so loving and a great family member and gets along real good with Samantha and Sebastian. Although she still knows that Samantha is the boss. We all love her so much. I am so glad they are going to tell the story of Hollie on the Animal Planet, we have been waiting to see it.

Update: June 17, 2005: Hollie is doing great! Her mange is finally gone and she has excellent health. She now weighs 41 lbs. and as you will see from her pictures...she has a beautiful "fox like" tail and no longer has those thin spots in her coat. She is the most loving dog and continues to learn new tricks. She gets along well with Sebastian and Samantha, they even play together.

Update: Feb 26, 2005: Wanted to show you how comfortable Ms. Hollie has gotten at her new home with her new family. Just wanted to let you know  how smart Hollie is...She has learned how sing, lay down and roll over on command. She has added this to her other tricks of sit and shake. 10 MELVIN ***Feb 8***

NOTES: I almost died due to an intestinal blockage but my foster mom did not give up and I am still alive thanks to her hard work and my desire to live. Everyone who met me when I was sick said I had a wonderful personality shining through even when I could barely move. I have Hypothyroidism and will require medicine for the rest of my life to control it. It will be worth it because I am such a special dog and have been through so much.

UPDATED: August 19. 2005. Just checking in.  Thought you'd like to see some photos of Melvin!  He is the sweetest dog.  I'm still trying to figure out his personality!  He's very attached to me and I take him everywhere I go!  Recently I found out that he loves water and tennis balls.  He's no retriever, but likes to rip them in two and then tears all of the felt off of them.  He then proudly walks home from the park with the ball dangling from his mouth!!  We head to the Millie Bush bark park on the weekend.  He enjoys the calm water, versus the gulf.  He hates the waves!
 His health is good.  He has allergies, but at this point I don't know to what.  Probably just Houston!!  He's on some medication to make it easier for him to breathe.  He loves to eat!!  He's gained a bit of weight, but overall is very healthy and happy! 
I hope that someday soon I can come back to Husky Haven for a friend for Melvin.  Right now, I think he's best being an only dog.  Jo

7 BOSUN ***Feb 2***

NOTES: I, Bosun, am either all or mostly Newfoundland Retriever. I was found running the streets of Rosenberg, and taken to Rosenberg Animal Control. There they were really nice to me - bathed me, began to teach me some manners and gave me my first puppy shot. (It's a great place!) I thought Newfie rescue was going to take me, but they had a
look and rejected me because I didn't seem to them to be all Newfie. But I am, if I do say so myself, a real cutie! Our vet says I will be an "apartment size Newfie" (she thinks I am indeed a Newfie, though maybe not a good one) - not over 90 pounds (Newfies can go up to 150+). From Rosenberg, Husky Haven has taken me in, had me neutered, got me my rabies vaccination , and more puppy shots, etc. Our HH "mom" thinks I might be a mix, but am indeed mostly Newfie. I am being fostered, and learning my manners. I am as of Jan 31, about 17 weeks old and weigh around 21
pounds. You should adopt me while I am small - firstly because I am so cute, and secondly, because I will likely be a big dog! More Pictures

Update: June 26, 2005: Now that we've had Taska for a few months now, I thought that I'd let yall know how she's doing. She has blended in beautifully with our family, and our other husky "Whisper". There was a lot of jealousy at first but this didn't last long, they now do a lot of ''playfull' fighting, and making noise at each other. Taska mastered the doggie door on our closed in patio in about five minutes, and it is evident that she didn't spend a lot of time on grass as she was very hesitant to spend any time on it . She now roams around the yard and seems to enjoy it very much. She is very insistent when she wants to be petted and will ''very strongly'' push her head under your arm and give you that look to pet her. We've removed her cage and replaced it with her own large bed near Whisper's and they both sleep in the family room, and don't bother each other's bed. When i give them fresh water each day i fill the bowl with water and ice cubes, and it's really funny to watch Taska bobbing for ice cubes-she loves them. We have found that if we leave a paper towel down at night it must attack her because she will shread it in self defense, but nothing else will be disturbed. She is doing well and we enjoy haveing her as a member of our family. --Johnny & Stephanie

UPDATE 11/3/05: I just wanted to give you an update on how Nadja is doing, I got her in January. I renamed her Montana, but we call her Tana for short. We were having some problems with her having accidents on the carpet for awhile, but she saw a couple of differnt vets and finally one of them gave her a medication called Proin, and she hasnt had a problem since. The vet said that it is pretty common when a female gets fixed that it can cause a hormonal change that causes the dog to not be able to control her bladder and this solved it. My neighbor has a huskey with the same problem, so if you ever see any more dogs with this problem it was easy to fix in our case, the medication is about $15 a month too, so very reasonable. Anyhow, she is doing great, earlier this month she got to go on her first hiking and camping trip and loved it, she even has her own tent so she doesnt try to get into mine all muddy. We are currently living in Florida and she loves the cooler weather we are getting, every morning when I wake up and every day when I get home from work she is waiting to go outside, she gets her exercize by pulling me on a skateboard, she isnt a great sled dog but is learning. The rest of the day she spends sleeping and looking cute, she doesnt have too hard of a life, actually she is quite spoiled, every time anyone walks past her she rolls over and wants a belly rub. The only problem we have with her is that she is terrified of cats, thats right, cats. we had my neighbors cat over and poor Tana sat in the corner as far away from the kitty as she could possibly be and whined and was a total whimp. Small dogs sometimes chase her too, but put her with a bigger dog and she is convinced that she is the boss. She gets to go to the beach all the time and when nobody else is there she gets to run off her leash and loves it, it is funny though because she wont ever go go too far, she doesnt like being not able to see me. She gets a bit of seperation anxiety I think, I can leave her at home all day by herself no problem, and she doesnt mind when I leave but she hates it when I bring her somewhere and not right next to her, for awhile she wouldnt even let my roomates play with her at the beach if I went swimming, she just did not want me to leave.I am moving to Maine in April and thinking about getting another husky, or possibly a malimute. I am sure Tana is going to love the cold weather.Thanks for all your help, and Tana is the best dog ever, Reann
